Barring an injury, however, we don't see McGahee losing the early-down job. Lance Ball, not Hillman, has been working with the first-team offense on passing downs.

McGahee is locked in as the Broncos' early-down workhorse, with Lance Ball, Knowshon Moreno and rookie Ronnie Hillman in the mix for passing-down duties. We don't believe Hillman will overtake McGahee at any point this season, barring injury.

The Broncos are among the league's more tight-lipped teams when it comes to injuries. Coach John Fox said McGahee's injury involves cartilage, but wouldn't elaborate. Rib cartilage injuries are tough for running backs because they often involve severe pain when hit. Consider McGahee very questionable for Sunday's game against the Raiders. Backups Lance Ball, Ronnie Hillman and Knowshown Moreno will all see reps if McGahee sits. Ball is the most likely starter.

He's likely headed for a "questionable" tag on Friday's injury report, and possible game-time decision against the Raiders. That would be a tough scenario for McGahee's owners, as the Broncos are hosting Oakland at 4:05ET. McGahee's status will be updated Thursday.

McGahee was practicing again on Thursday after emerging unscathed from Wednesday's practice. The veteran will decide later in the week if the injury will require extra padding on Sunday. At this point, McGahee is a good bet for 15+ touches against an Oakland defense allowing the eighth-most fantasy points to opposing backs.
